Dr. Henry Tsang, AAA, FRAIC, RHFAC, LEED GA, WELL AP, is Associate Professor and Chair of the RAIC Centre for Architecture at Athabasca University. An architect, educator, and researcher, his work advances inclusive, sustainable, and health-centred design, examining the intersections of accessibility, culture, and environmental responsibility in the built environment. He leads the Centre’s virtual design studios and coordinates curriculum across communications, professional practice, theory, and history, fostering innovative and accessible architectural education.
With more than 20 years of international practice in Canada, Japan, and Korea, Dr. Tsang is a registered architect and Principal of Henry Tsang Architect, an award-winning research-driven design practice based in Calgary, Alberta. His scholarship and professional leadership bridge academia and practice. He has edited and contributed to key publications, including the Canadian Handbook of Practice for Architects, and his research appears in leading international journals addressing aging societies, inclusive environments, and sustainable design innovation.
Dr. Tsang has delivered invited lectures and keynote addresses at major global forums, including events hosted by the United Nations, TEDx, HPAIR, the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada, the Society for the Study of Architecture in Canada, and BUILDEX. He has also presented at universities worldwide, including Harvard University, University of Tokyo, Waseda University, Nihon University, Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Hanyang University, Keimyung University, University of Calgary, University of Alberta, University of Manitoba, University of British Columbia, Concordia University, McGill University, and Herzing College.
In 2024–2025, he was appointed Visiting Research Fellow at the University of Tokyo, where he investigated architectural responses to aging societies. He is a Fellow and advisor to the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada and serves on Council for the Alberta Association of Architects, contributing to governance, policy, and the advancement of professional standards.
Dr. Tsang holds a B.Sc.Arch. and M.Arch. from McGill University and a Ph.D. from the University of Tokyo as a Japan-funded MEXT (Monbukagakusho) Scholar. His honours include the Educator of the Year Award (National Association of Career Colleges), Canadian Architect Award of Excellence, two Construction Canada Emerging Leader Awards, CBC Calgary Asian Changemaker Award, and the ASTech Award for Regional Innovation in Research.
